An act of service for BillionGraves turns into one woman’s personal miracle.

Graveyard with celtic crossColette Hokanson has a tip for anyone interested in genealogy. Her advice? “Always keep BillionGraves in mind” when you’re traveling anywhere. Make time on family vacations or on a Saturday to take a few pictures. Make time to stop and take your kids—my kids love it! If we don’t stop and take pictures of these cemeteries, we don’t know how much longer some of these headstones will last… Just do it—even if it’s only a few headstones. You never know what impact it will have on someone’s life.”

What is a BillionGraves? “BillionGraves is a free website to look up headstone photos from around the world. Volunteers use Smartphones to take GPS tagged photos of headstones. Photos are uploaded to the BillionGraves website and then photos are transcribed by volunteers. These photos can now be easily accessed for research online”

How to transcribe Photos? Visit the BillionGraves transcription page and review the transcription help. Enter names, dates, and any other information on the headstone into the fields provided. Photos will then be available from the search page.”

How to take photos for BillionGraves? “Download the App for iPhone/iPad or Android. Locate and travel to a local cemetery. Snap photos of headstones using the BillionGraves App . Watch out for your feet! Be careful of your shadow! Make sure headstone info is readable. Upload images through the BillionGraves App.”
