One day last week I decided to check out what credentials people were using on the Internet to denote their professional genealogy status besides a college degree (BA, BS or MA in genealogy and family history)or certification of CGRS or CG; or an AG accreditation. I found R.G. which stands for Registered Genealogist. I discovered there is no list of Registered Genealogist and it is not affiliated with any professional genealogy organization. It is an old post-nominal that someone created years ago in an effort to start a new name for commercial practitioners in genealogy. It is not a current credential and has no testing, no peer-review, and no alignment with today’s standards. Interesting. Just one more way people can self-designate their “professional status”
