Feel like kicking back and reading the newspaper?
“Chronicling America” has 7 million historic American digitized newspapers!
Digitized Newspapers also give us a sense of the time period, what people were thinking, what they were interested in, etc. Now a Library of Congress website, “Chronicling America, “ provides access to over 7 million digitized historic American newspapers for researchers to peruse.
The Library of Congress describes “Chronicling America “as a website “that provides access to information about historic newspapers and select digitized newspaper pages, and is produced by the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP).
NDNP, a partnership between the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the Library of Congress (LC), is a long-term effort to develop an Internet-based, searchable database of U.S. newspapers with descriptive information and select digitization of historic pages. Supported by NEH, this rich digital resource will be developed and permanently maintained at the Library of Congress. An NEH award program will fund the contribution of content from, eventually, all U.S. states and territories.”
According to Kimberly Powell (about.com genealogy) “The National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP), a program funded by the National Endowment for the Humanties (NEH), awards money to public newspaper archives in each state to digitize and deliver historic newspaper content to the Library of Congress for inclusion in Chronicling America.
As of October 2013, Chronicling America includes content from participating repositories in 35 states.” She further adds, “Additional papers and states are being added on a regular basis. The collection includes papers from 1836 through 1922; newspapers published after December 31, 1922, are not included due to copyright restrictions.”
