Announcement: Career Professional Genealogist, Mary E. Petty, B.A. Cum Laude (History) Requests Senators and Congressment,Fellow American, Members of the Association of Professional Genealogists (APG), Genealogical Speakers Guild (GSG), Council of Genealogy Columnists / International Society of Family History Writers and Editors (CGC/ISFHWE) and the Board for the Certification of Genealogists Restore the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) Funding.
Thank you to all who have brought this critical issue to our attention. I hope everyone on these lists is writing their representatives about continuing NARA Funding. I sent the following to all 5 Congressmen and Senators of Utah.
Dear Congressman Jim Matheson, Congressman Rob Bishop, Congressman Chris Cannon, Senator Orrin Hatch, and Senator Wallace Bennett,
It has come to our attention that Congress has cut the operations funding of NARA, a primary genealogical and historical research repository for professional and hobbyist alike. Studying one’s family history is the number one hobby in America and the resources of NARA are vital for all those who are seeking their genealogy or the genealogy of their clients. What a tremendous loss it will be if NARA is closed evenings and weekends because of this devastating loss of funding. As a career full time genealogist here in Salt Lake City, Utah, the heart of World Wide genealogy because of the Family History Library, we constantly require access to NARA records for our clients, who are located all over the USA and across the globe. We hire sub-contractors to do this records acquisitions work for us in the NARA facilities outside of Utah. As our Congressmen and Senators, we encourage you to work for the restoration of the needed funds to keep NARA open both in the daytime and evening hours including Friday and Saturday. These are important times and days for those who have full time jobs in other careers and use evenings and weekends to do their genealogical and historical research. We are available to help you understand the value and importance of genealogical research to people in all walks of life, business circumstances, scientific research, ethnic and multi-racial cultures, travel, genetics, health, Historical Event Genealogy, and a wide variety of private and public interests. Please contact us at 1.800.570.4049 to discuss this needed legislation.
I am the Vice President of HEIRLINES Family History & Genealogy (www.heirlines.com), a Utah professional genealogy research services firm. I am a member in good standing of the Salt Lake Chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogist and the National APG, National Genealogical Society, Utah Genealogical Society, Genealogical Speakers Guild, and International Society of Family History Writers and Editors. You represent Utah, the state that has more career professional genealogists, part-time professionals, and hobbyists per capita than any other state in the Union. Utah should lead out in this valuable quest for continued access to genealogical and historical records that give life to ancestries across the globe. Please help us accomplish this goal by working to keep NARA funding commensurate with the needs of the public. Thank you for your thoughtful consideration of this important cause.
