Genealogical sites – LDS members gain access sooner.

Free access to major genealogical sites is just around the corner.

genealogical sitesFamilySearch is moving full speed ahead in its plans to provide LDS Church members with free access to three major genealogical sites. Free access to Ancestry.com, FindMyPast.com and MyHeritage.com was slated to be available sometime near the end of 2014 but it now looks like this will happen much sooner, as early as late summer. The project is a part of an ongoing partnership which allows the genealogical companies to work together to combine resources and gather historical records. This is very exciting news to LDS genealogists everywhere!

Thom Reed, FamilySearch’s partner marketing manager, explains what all the excitement is about.

“Partnerships between FamilySearch, Ancestry, FindMyPast, MyHeritage and other companies in the future will provide new opportunities for people to discover their ancestors (and) preserve and share those memories for generations to come,” Reed said. “By working collaboratively with these companies, FamilySearch enables individuals around the globe to have access to billions of more records and make more conclusions to their family trees than they would otherwise have been able to do.”

“Free access to two of the commercial family history websites is already available to the general public at more than 4,700 FamilySearch-owned family history centers and libraries worldwide. Ancestry and FindMyPast currently offer free access to all patrons at the centers. MyHeritage will begin granting free access later this year, Reed said.”

Access to online family history records to increase.

LDS church members will get free access to more online family history records.

Photoxpress_8410395Family Search.org has recently announced that they will now collaborate with several commercial family history organizations in an effort to share resources and records. This will allow member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints increased access to extensive family history records, including obituaries, with no cost.

According to Don Anderson, a senior vice president from FamilySearch, “Members of the LDS Church will be granted free subscriptions to Ancestry.com (the world edition subscription), MyHeritage.com (plus subscription) and FindMyPast.com (plus subscription), accessible from any location. These sites have between three and four times the number of records FamilySearch has, so it’s a substantial amount of both records and technology.” .

Anderson went on to say, “”I think it’s extraordinarily significant for several reasons. One, in total it saves members of the church millions of dollars. Second, for those on the edge of family history, who maybe in the past couldn’t afford or it wasn’t a high enough priority to spend $400 a year, this means they can have access to all the resources of those sites for free. Not only will it save money, but it will dramatically broaden the number of individuals involved in family history who otherwise wouldn’t have gotten involved or found records at these sites because it wasn’t in FamilySearch.” .
